Beqa Lagoon bull sharks, Rainbow Reef's technicolour walls, Kadavu's untouched barrier reef — your complete guide to diving in Fiji.
See Best Dive Sites ↓Jacques Cousteau called Fiji's Rainbow Reef in Taveuni the "Soft Coral Capital of the World" — and the title has stuck. Fiji's combination of warm, nutrient-rich waters, diverse reef systems across multiple island groups, and extraordinary biodiversity makes it a destination where both first-time and world-travelled divers consistently have experiences they don't get elsewhere.
What makes Fiji's reefs special is variety. You can dive pristine wall dives, encounter bull sharks at feeding sites, snorkel with manta rays, explore underwater caves, and dive WWII wrecks — all within the same island chain.
Beqa Lagoon, off Fiji's south coast near Pacific Harbour, hosts one of the world's most famous shark dives. At 30 metres depth on the outer wall, divers kneel in a semicircle and watch Fiji's expert dive masters feed a congregation of bull sharks, tiger sharks, and whitetip reef sharks.
This is not a cage dive — you're in open water alongside 8–15 bull sharks at close range. It is conducted with exceptional safety (the operation has run since 1999 with zero incidents) but requires calm, experienced divers.
The most celebrated soft coral diving in the world. The Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu creates a high-current channel that feeds the reef with exceptional nutrients — the result is walls encrusted in dense, spectacular soft corals in every colour. The Great White Wall (a 40m wall of white soft coral) is one of Fiji's signature dives.
The fourth largest barrier reef in the world, wrapping around Kadavu Island in Fiji's far south. Almost no tourist infrastructure exists here compared to the Mamanucas or Yasawas — these reefs are pristine, rarely visited, and extraordinarily rich. Manta ray encounters at cleaning stations are common.
For divers staying near Nadi, the Mamanuca outer reefs are excellent — accessible, diverse, and suitable for new divers or those completing PADI certifications. The outer reef walls at Malolo and Mana have solid coral cover and regular encounters with reef sharks, sea turtles, and eagle rays.
